When plaque hardens to the teeth, it is referred to as tartar. Sometimes, the dentist will also refer to this as calculus. It can often form beneath the gum line and irritate the tissues further. When it’s present, you have a higher chance of gum disease and tooth decay. In addition, it is porous, so it tends to absorb stains.

 

Diagnosing Tartar Buildup

It’s difficult to tell if there is plaque build-up because it is colorless. If tartar is above the gum line, it is easy to see because it has a brown or yellow color. The best way to determine if you are struggling with tartar or plaque is to see the dentist for a full exam.

 

It’s also important to remember that because tartar is porous, stains are going to show up quickly. This is most prevalent when you drink coffee or tea. You’ll also notice it more as a smoker. 

 

Preventing Tartar Buildup

The only way to prevent tartar or plaque buildup in your mouth is by maintaining proper oral hygiene. Use these tips to keep tartar at bay:

 

• Use tartar control toothpaste at least twice a day

• Use a powered or electric toothbrush

• Floss once a day

• Use a mouth rinse for tartar control

• Head to your dentist in 20707 twice a year for checkup and professional cleaning

• Eat a nutritious diet full of vegetables and fruit

 

If you drink tea or coffee, you need to take steps to prevent tartar even more so you don’t stain your teeth. In addition, being a smoker is a bad combination with tartar, so now would be a great time to quit. Not only will this step benefit your teeth, but you will be healthier overall.

 

Treating Tartar Buildup

Once tartar has been allowed to buildup on the teeth, the only way you can remove it is to visit with Dr. Masood or one of our hygienists. They will perform a process called scaling to clean off the tartar on your teeth. This involves the use of special instruments which can reach below your gum line to clean the teeth.
